In Need of a Vacation

Alex didn't get home from work until 10:00 tonight. He has been working long hours lately, and I think that while he sleeps, he dreams about getting away from it all. This is especially evident from one of tonight's sleepy conversations:

Alex: "Other than you, I think that's about it."
Amy: "About what?"
Alex: "From Maui to Phoenix."

I think it's time for a vacation . . . I'm up for it, especially if Hawaii is involved! Hopefully the desire to go somewhere tropical will still be there in the morning. :-)

Root Root Root for the Cubbies

Earlier, I was sitting in bed watching TV as Alex lay asleep next to me. Here is (one of) tonight's conversations:

Alex: "I'm sorry."
Amy: "Sorry for what?"
Alex: "For looking away."
Amy: "For looking away from what?"
Alex: "The show."
Amy: "What show?"
Alex: "The Cubbies show."

No one will ever have to question Alex's loyalty to the Chicago Cubs. :-)

I Will NOT Laugh about This in the Morning!

About a month ago, Alex got up in the night, walked over to our dresser, and started to look behind the laundry baskets up against the wall.

I asked him what he was doing and he said he was measuring the 2 x 4. When I told him he was talking in his sleep, he kept saying that he was perfectly coherent, and that he would kindly appreciate it if I stopped telling him he was asleep when he wasn't.

So wanting to give him the benefit of the doubt, I asked him why he was measuring the 2 x 4 that doesn't exist. He became flustered and then climbed back into bed. I leaned over, gave him a big hug, and told him that I loved him and that he would laugh about this when I talked to him in the morning. He very seriously insisted that he wouldn't.

When I told him about the whole situation the next morning, he laughed. :-)

McDonald's Wind-Up Toys

Alex: "Make them stop!"

Amy: "Make what stop?"

Alex: "They keep going off, and they're keeping me up."

Amy: "What keeps going off?"

Alex: "Those --duhduhduhduh -- things . . . ya know . . . those little mc-mc-mc-Mcdonald's wind-up toys."

Apparently my very well-spoken husband has a stuttering problem.

The only McDonald's wind-up toys I can think of were the Star Wars Clone Wars toys, but I threw those away over a year ago.

It seems like Yo-Yo-Yoda has come back to life to ha-ha-ha-haunt him in his sleep. Ahhhhhh!

Serves him right for making me watch Star Wars that one Saturday.

Musings from Game Night

Last Friday, Alex and I attended a really fun game night in our ward. We played a psycho game called "Killer Bunnies" and I think it had some sort of weird effect on Alex.

Friday night's narcoleptic statement consisted of: "I need more clues. I can't make a move with out more clues."

Tonight's statement was: "I'm trying to decide which card to discard. I need to save the . . . the . . . thingies."

No more killer bunnies for him.

Quit Playing Tricks on Me

The other night I was in our living room talking with my brother on Skype, when I heard a huge crash coming from the bedroom. A few seconds later Alex walked out, looking quite disoriented.

I put my brother on hold to ask what was wrong. Alex responded with "Why do you keep playing tricks on me?"

"What tricks?" I asked.

Alex: "You keep texting me, why are you doing that?"

Amy: "Honey, I'm not texting you. I'm on the phone with my brother."

Alex: "Well fine, but please stop playing tricks on me."

Amy: "I'm not, your sleep walking/talking right now and you don't realize it."

Alex then gave me a disapproving look, and then went back into our bedroom and fell asleep.

The funny thing about this is that Alex doesn't even have texting capabilities on his cell phone. In fact, I don't think he's ever sent/received a text message in his life.

And even more disturbingly, I have no idea what that crash was! There was no evidence of any thing falling or breaking in our bedroom.

Sometimes I wonder what goes on in that pretty little head of his . . . :-)

I Don't Even Want to Know

Tonight, Alex sat up in his sleep and declared that he was "Debbing with Glaffing." When I asked him what this meant, he replied "I get on and off the train."

I don't even want to know who/what "Debbing" or "Glaffing" is. :-)

Time to Call the Shrink

It happened again a few weeks ago: for the fourth time in our marriage, the "spider" Alex swears is there "appeared" again. Even when I turned on the lights to show him there were no spiders, he still kept insisting that a big one was in our bed. Finally, he snapped out of it and woke up, albeit slightly embarrassed.

The next morning I jokingly mentioned to Alex that maybe he should see a therapist to overcome his spider nightmares. He said he would consider talking to a shrink, as long as I agree to talk to one about my reoccurring "wedding planning" nightmares which result in me waking up to a cold sweat, sore jaw (from grinding my teeth), and clenched fists.

Well put, Alex. I guess we all have our demons. :-)

Sleep Eating

Alex took the day off last Friday for his Birthday. I, unfortunately, did not have that option and had to go to work. Even though he had the luxury of being able to sleep in, he insisted that I wake him before I went to work so that he could open his presents. Then he could play with all the new toys I got for him during the day.

So, at 6:10 am, my trusty alarm clock went off and I woke up Alex (as requested) with a special birthday song (not requested). The following was what transpired:

Me: You’ve had a birthday, shout “Hooray” . . . Honey, shout hooray!
Alex: No
Me: We want to sing to you today. One year older and wiser too! Happy Birthday . . . Honey, clap . . .
Alex: No
Me: to you!!!

Unbeknownst to me, he had been up ‘till 3:30 am working the night before and had changed his mind about wanting to get up early and open presents. Well, I still made him get up and open his gifts because I wanted to see the expression on his face while he opened them.

He was expressionless.

Then, I brought in his birthday cheesecake (from Cheesecake Factory), and we shared a piece while watching “Saved by the Bell.” He then went back to bed and I got up to get ready for the day.

Later that day during my lunch break, I called him to see how his day was going. He told me about how he loved the presents and apologized for being so grumpy that morning.

He then told me that he was so excited to eat his birthday cheesecake later that day. When I explained to him that we had already had his birthday cheesecake that morning, he had no recollection of eating it! He had missed out on the entire cheesecake experience! Poor guy . . . guess he’ll have to wait again until next year.

Happy Birthday Honey!

Bed Towers

So here is the nonsensical conversation we had in Alex’s sleep at about 5:00 am this morning:

Alex: “Honey? Honey . . . Is our bed tower high enough?”
Amy: “What?”
Alex: “Is our bed tower high, medium, or low?”

I was so tired and a little upset about being woken up an hour before I had to, so even though I could have had some fun with this, I just said “Honey, you’re talking in your sleep again. Leave me alone.”

I don’t even want to know what’s on the video games Alex plays after I fall asleep. :-)

Alarm Clark Exhaustion

Alex was working really long hours last month, and there were more than a few nights where he was only able to get a couple hours of sleep (we are not complaining though, because we are just so grateful that he has a good job!).

Well on one such night, he went to bed at about 3:00am and had to get back up at 7:00. His alarm clock went off bright and early, and then I heard the sound of spare change jingling in this little English telephone booth bank that we keep on our nightstand. Alex starts getting flustered with it, shaking it up vehemently, and turns to me and asks, “where are the buttons, how do you turn this darn thing off?!!!!!”

Poor guy was so tired that he was trying to turn off the alarm clock and didn’t realize he had the bank in his hands (and they are not the same shape, size, weight or anything).

Arachnophobia

So many of you have heard the spider story from when we were first married. If not, let me give you a little recap:

About a week or two after we got married, I was peacefully sleeping through the night when I was abruptly woken up to Alex screaming, “Amy GET UP, GET OUT OF THE BED RIGHT NOW!!!” He was half away across the room, almost into the kitchen. I was still pretty out of it, so I was like, “what . . . why?” Alex responded “HURRY GET OUT OF BED NOW! IT’S GOING TO GET YOU!!! AMY NOW!!!”

At this point, I freaked out because I thought someone had broken into our apartment. So, I hurriedly jumped out of bed and ran towards the door. As I’m doing this, Alex just stands there still, all of a sudden completely calm. Wondering why he wasn’t following me, I looked back to see that he had turned on the lights and was getting back into bed.

Confused and still quite freaked out, I said “Honey, we got to get out of here. What happened?” He looked up, looked down, looked at me, and said “I thought I saw a giant spider dropping down from the ceiling. Never mind, you can go back to bed.” Then he promptly turned over and started to snore, as if it had never happened.

Needless to say, I had a hard time getting back to sleep that night.

Well, we now look back on this and laugh. But as Alex’s fear of spiders run deep, it actually happened again about a week ago. This time it was a little less intense, I think Alex realized that he was just having a bad dream before he got to the girlishly screaming part. He just turned on the lights and calmly told me to get to bed. Having been through this before, I asked why and he just looked around the room and said, “never mind, I thought I saw a spider.”

“Cushion” Love

It’s been a while since I’ve last blogged an entry. This is partially due to the fact that since this blog was created, I’ve started working which requires early mornings and less sleep. This has caused me to sleep deeper and not wake up when Alex starts talking. But there are a couple of things that have happened over the last couple of months that are definitely worth mentioning.

We went through quite the process buying pillows for our couch. Our couch is big and bulky and nothing fancy really matches it, so we’ve been through about three different sets. Well, we finally found some that we liked, and Alex affectionately refers to them as “Cushions.”

One morning, we woke up to the pillows at the foot of our bed. I asked Alex how they got here. He looked confused for a minute, kind of stuttered, and then mentioned that he vaguely remembers going out into the living room and bringing them into our bedroom during the middle of the night. When I asked why, he said “I really don’t know.”

Alex no longer just talks the talk, he now walks the walk.
